5 Tips To Be A STAR Client

In my years of being a hairstylist I have learned what makes a great client and what makes a.... not so great client. Luckily, I have never had to fire anyone before but I have definitely had some rough appointments that made me strongly consider it. While no one wants to be THAT client, it's not always easy to recognize the things that give our stylist the "ick." DON'T WORRY, I am here to help!

Here are 5 tips to make your hair appointment go smoothly:

1. Show up 10-15 minutes early.

-It's great to show up early so your stylist knows that you are reliable. Showing up late or not showing up at all really puts your stylist in a tight spot. If you show up late, your appointment may need to be rescheduled or you may not be able to receive all the services you expected that day. Respecting each other's time is a good way to create a strong trust bond with your stylist.

-If your stylist is still with a client when you show up, don't worry! Enjoy some refreshments while you wait. Remember you are early! Being there 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment means you might have to wait until the person before you is finished with their service. Most of the time, I am ready when my clients get there so we can start the service early or have time to catch up without it effecting the total service time.

2. Have patience during the consultation.

    - The consultation is CRUCIAL to achieving all your hair goals. Rushing your stylist through it will only hurt your end result. Sometimes it can seem like we are asking a lot of weird questions but, trust us and trust the process! The questions we ask are designed to gather specific details so we can put together a game plan based on your goals, hair history and current state of your hair. Consultations keep you and your stylist on the same page and assures that your expectations are realistic for your hair.

3. Take your bathroom breaks before the service starts and, if needed, during the processing time.

    - Stopping in the middle of a chemical service can be dangerous! It risks chemical burns, damage to your hair, or damage to your personal items. We can't control what is happening on your head if you aren't in the chair. While I always understand that sometimes you just can't wait, making sure you go to the restroom before your service starts will help prevent any unexpected pauses in your service. With that being said, please don't ever feel afraid to ask your stylist to stop so you may use the restroom if you are unable to wait. WE GET IT! I always make sure to keep my clients protected as much as I can so nothing happens while they go to the restroom. Don't worry, we understand that things happen.

4. Be honest with your stylist!

     - Whether it's during the consultation or after the service is completed, tell your stylist how you feel and ask questions. It is important that we know you are happy or if you want to make some changes. You are free to express your thoughts and feelings. Just remember to do it in a polite and professional manner. Not everything can be predicted when it comes to hair and mistakes happen. Sometimes miscommunication can result in something different than what you were expecting. DON'T PANIC! Tell your stylist what you like or don't like and ask if it can be fixed. I am always 100% honest with my clients even when I have made a mistake. It forms a strong bond of trust between me and my clients. Telling your stylist the truth from beginning to end will prevent mistakes from happening and keep you both on the same page.

5. Buy the recommended products

    - While it is true that we make a small profit off of retail sales, that isn't the main reason stylists are pushing product recommendations on you. Using the recommended products a stylist gives you ensures that your hair will be protected outside the salon. From environmental to heat damage, stylists know what to use to keep your hair looking FABULOUS. Professional products are not only better for your hair and scalp but also are designed to target specific issues or maintenance. For example, if you get a color service that costs you $200, you wouldn't want to use a cheap drug-store shampoo that will strip the color and potentially dry your hair and scalp out. It's like rinsing money down the drain! Yes, professional products can be pricey but, if used correctly they can last up to a year. Quality doesn't stop once you leave the salon. If you are having trouble buying everything that's recommended, just get one product. Make sure to ask which product would be the most important in maintaining your hair.
